DESCRIPTION
Hungary, just after the revolution of 1956. A political journalist Eva Szalanczky, is discovered dead near the border. Her friend Livia is in hospital with a broken neck; Livia's husband, Donci, is under arrest. A year earlier. Eva gets a job as a writer. She meets Livia and is attracted to her. Livia feels much the same, but has doubts and hesitations because she has husband. In their work, they (and Eva in particular) bang up against the limits of telling political truths; in private, they confront the limits of living out sexual and emotional truth. It was the first film about love between women in Eastern Europe. It is also considered as one of the best on this theme ever created.

DIRECTOR
Károly Makk (1925-2017) was acclaimed Hungarian director and screenwriter. Makk was born in the town of Berettyóújfalu, in eastern Hungary, where his father, Kálmán, owned a cinema, which gave his son the chance to watch many movies. His parents, who like many Hungarians had lost their business after the country came under Soviet rule, initially intended him to become an engineer, a common profession on his mother’s side of the family. Instead, he entered the nationalised film industry, working his way up from assistant to screenwriter and director. Károly Makk was distinguished and awarded filmmaker who created memorable stories about life under a totalitarian regime, which were shown around the world.FILMOGRAPHY
