Károly MakkKároly Makk (1925–2017) is now considered one of the greatest directors and scriptwriters in the history of Hungarian cinema. As many as five of his films were nominated for a Palme d’Or in Cannes.
At the Two Riversides Festival, we will screen three of them: “Love” (1971), “A Very Moral Night” (1977) and “Another Way” (1982). What’s characteristic of his films is that he created stories around female characters in a social and political context. In the early 80s, with this skill in creating portraits of women he made “Another Way”, a story of a same-sex love between women, shown against the backdrop of political events in Hungary in the years 1956–58. The lead roles were played by the fantastic Grażyna Szapołowska and Jadwiga Jankowska-Cieślak, of whom the latter won a Palme d’Or in Cannes. Aside from Károly Makk, another look at the Hungarian cinema will be presented by Bogdan Arpad, a director of the young generation, whose new film “Genezis” will be screened for the first time at the Festival.
