DESCRIPTION
What is wealth – money or meaningful relationships? After one of their shoplifting sessions, Osamu and his son come across a little girl in the freezing cold. At first reluctant to shelter the girl, Osamu’s wife agrees to take care of her after learning of the hardships she faces. Although the family is poor, barely making enough money to survive through petty crime, they seem to live happily together until an unforeseen incident reveals hidden secrets, testing the bonds that unite them… but, what makes a family, blood ties or caring for each other? And how to judge actions that are unlawful but morally upright?

DIRECTOR
Hirokazu Kore-eda (1962) Originally intended to be a novelist, but after graduating from Waseda University in 1987 went on to become an assistant director at T.V. Man Union. His first feature, “Maboroshi no hikari” (“Maboroshi”, 1995), based on a Teru Miyamoto novel and drawn from his own experiences while filming “Kare no inai hachigatsu ga” (“August Without Him”, 1994), won jury prizes at Venice and Chicago.
