Margarethe von Trotta (1942), German actress, director and screenwriter. In the 1960s she moved to Paris, where she worked for film collectives. She has co-created film scripts and short films, and has also co-directed. At the same time, she has developed a successful acting career, appearing in films by renowned German directors such as Rainer Werner Fassbinder and Volker Schlöndorff. Since the 1970s, she has focused on directing. Many of her films feature expressive female characters, usually set against an important political background.
