DESCRIPTION

In Burma, the “Venerable Wirathu” is a highly influential Buddhist monk. Meeting him amounts to traveling to the heart of everyday racism and observing how Islamophobia and hate speech lead to violence and destruction. Yet this is a country in which 90% of the population has adopted Buddhism as a faith: a religion based on a peaceful, tolerant and non-violent way of life.

DIRECTOR
Barbet Schroeder (1941) is a Franco-Swiss movie director and producer who started his career in French cinema in the 1960s, working together with directors such as Jean-Luc Godard and Jacques Rivette. He became an internationally renowned director, producer, and actor, known for his versatility and for the controversial subject matter of his films. His company “Les Films du Losange” which he set up at the age of 22, produced a number of important New Wave films, most notably Erich Rohmer’s “Moral Tales” series. His work as a director has ranged from the 60s counter-culture hit “More” 1969, to the classic documentary portrait of “Général Idi Amin Dada” 1974, and from the sexually graphic “Maîtresse” 1976, to mainstream Hollywood vehicles such as the Oscar-nominated “Reversal of Fortune” 1990 and “Single White Female” 1992.
